Astounding Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Each year hundreds of people lose their lives or are seriously injured in pedestrian accidents. These accidents can happen to anyone, even when people are following traffic laws. In an attempt to cut down on the amount of pedestrian accidents, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration worked with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety to search for trends in accident report data.
What the two institutes discovered is that 69% of those killed in a pedestrian accident were male. The four states that topped the list of accidents were California, Florida, Texas and New York. These four states alone comprised 41% of pedestrian accidents, an alarming figure that surprised researchers. Pedestrian accidents are more likely to happen between Friday and Sunday, from4 PM and 4 AM.
Of those accidents that affected children under the age of 16, 36% happened between 3 PM and 7 PM.
